Summer hopper fishing can be some of the most fantastic dry fly fishing of the year. A slight breeze, warm days and high banks with plenty of grass hoppers gets those big trout looking for a meal. Many of our guests are suprised by the types of flies our guides choose; foam bodies, rubber legs and the size - yes they are big and ugly, but that can bring the big boys right to the surface. Suprisingly, many of the trout sip the hopper instead of smashing it off the surface. This usually indicates a larger trout wary of giving it's location away to those ever present Osprey's looking for a mid afternoon snack. Hopper fishing is usually best in the month of August from 2pm until about 5 pm, but can occur even earlier in the day. The Yellowstone River is our primary hopper water, but many of the waters in Yellowstone National Park and the Boulder River also have supurb fishing. If you have yet to experience the excitement of summer hopper fishing we encourage you to contact us so we can show you what it's all about. |
